about

Hot on the heels of his debut single release as simply John Doherty, the former Little Hours mainman is back with another new song. The Donegal-based singer-songwriter says: "As a songwriter, I struggled at the beginning of lockdown. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get everything perfect but nothing felt just right. This song marks a change and the start of this new chapter for me. It came from me just stripping everything back, picking up the guitar and being honest. I pretty much wrote the song in one sitting. It almost came out start to finish once I knew what I wanted to say. It’s about trying to find the perfect thing to say even when you know it won’t change anything." Like it's predecessor - 'Just For The Record' - the new song has been produced by John and long-term studio collaborator Tommy McLaughlin at Attica Studios in Donegal.

lyrics

We packed the car on a Friday night so we could lie in the morning
I was woke by a kiss that should have come with a warning
As I drank a coffee while I watch you brush your hair
Thought this is better than dinner and a show anywhere

Lie out back on a summer night at your parent's house
Drink red wine while the sun went down and fall asleep on the couch
Lay on me in your summer dress while I trace your skin
There was no other place that I'd have rather been
There was no other place that I'd have rather been

What if I've left it and now it's too late
Trying to find just the right words to say?
What if you're waiting and hoping I'd call?
What if it didn't matter what I said at all?
What if you thought I was doing okay
And that I've said all that I have to say?
What if you think that I could forget about you?
Well it's six in the morning and I'm still wide awake

I can't help but think about the way it was before
The first time you said "Boy, I love ya" you had me on the floor
I can still feel your breath while you whispered in my ear
They were better than any other words that I could hear

What if I've left it and now it's too late
Trying to find just the right words to say?
What if you're waiting and hoping I'd call?
What if it didn't matter what I said at all?
What if you thought I was doing okay
And that I've said all that I have to say?
What if you think that I could forget about you?
Well it's six in the morning and I'm still wide awake

Maybe I joked around a little too much
Maybe I said something or didn't say enough?
Well if you thought there was something out there
Just so you know, I'd have gone with you anywhere
What if you're stubborn, as stubborn as me?
Maybe I was happy with everything I'd seen?
What if you're waiting and hoping I'd call?
What if it didn't matter what I said at all?
